Shipwrecks of the Sinai Peninsula

by Roger Roth

There are numerous shipwrecks around the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula of Egypt, in the Red Sea. These ships went down due to either human error by hitting the many reefs spotting the perimeters of the busy shipping channels, or sunk by the German Luftwaffe during WWII. Some of these shipwrecks date back as far as 1869 and others sank as recently as 1983. Some are only shells of their original structure, inundated with beautiful hard and soft corals, giving habitat and protection to the surrounding marine life while others still hold most all of the cargo they originally carried. This program will present a picture of the life and demise of these wrecks and show why they are so popular to divers with an interest in recreational wreck diving.
